My entry about Goose-Stepping Hippies was in the Carnival of the Vanities this week. Also in there was this piece called Liberal Fundamentalism by Mahatma over at the Loonatic Left, on a similar theme.

I would agree that fundamentalism in all forms is void of virtue but i disagree that the real fundamentlist dangers come from “liberals”. Right wing talk radio, cable tv pundits, ans such are a much larger danger to the political psyche of America than the PC police.

BUt i agree, free speech is very important, as argued by the liberal john stuart mill in “On Liberty” where he argues that nobody knows the whole truth so open and frequent debate among all positions is best to arrive at the best conclusions which support liberty and freedom.

But again, the PC police is not the main danger here. In fact the “left-right” debate is of more danger in fueling totalitarianism in the US than the PC police. The corporate media who fule irrational nationalism, militarism, and outright lies is much more of a danger to freedom than feminists, progressives and such.

Instead of debating about left and right why not think and debate about sustantive conceptions of virtue, morals, ethics, liberty, and freedom.

Well, I agree with that.

But then I’d like you to notice that Bush hasn’t been just talking about spreading democracy, he’s been actually following through, that US Foreign Policy has taken a 90 degree turn from the Cold War days. :-)
