Talk about a can of worms. Left wing, right wing, national socialists. Are you saying the Nazis were left wing socialists? Yes the Nazi government owned and controlled the means of production, a basic requirement for socialism. But there was no advocacy of greater freedom and well being for the common man, the basic requirement of left wingers. They were facists, or did you forget. Right wing dictators. Stalin was another dictator who used right wing tactics to belie what he called his governmental style. Communism was stolen by the Bolsheviks to become a socialist dictatorship. Bolshevik means majority when in reality they never were a majority, check your history. No matter what they call themselves they were both dictators that controled the means of production and distribution for their countries.

There were no left wing governments involved in either WWI or WWII outside of what you might think of the good old USA. WWI was the last struggle amongst the imperial aristrocracy. WWII was the bloodbath of Nazis vs Communists and the USA.

Was there some sort of death and misery that surpassed those epics of the 20th century? Caused by left wing governments? Your opinion is truly a bastard of common sense and history.

Actually, the Nazi’s did talk about greater well-being for the common man they just had a limited definition of who that “common man” was supposed to be. As a simple example, read the history of the Volkswagen. Advocacy of greater freedom for the common man has never been a basic requirement of left-wingers. I’ve read my history, have you read your Karl Marx? He talks about the “dictatorship of the proletariat” quite clearly. He claims its supposed to “fade away”, but it never seems to. If greater freedom for the common man were exclusively left wing, Libertarians would be considered radical leftists instead of radical rightists…

My point really though is not that the Nazi’s were a left wing government, but rather that totalitarianism is the wolf in sheeps clothing in any philosophy. You may like to think that totalitarian governments are all really right wing, but that’s not borne out by history. There were many prominent leftists in the US who supported the Bolsheviks at the time.

Otherwise, I think we’re in agreement here. Totalitarianism, whether “left”, “right”, or “islamic” are bad, and while it would be nice to believe that only “right” wing governments are dictatorships, the reality is that power becomes its own reason for existence. Totalitarianism of any stripe just substitutes the “privileged” for whatever group they were supposed to replace. So you swap one privileged group for another.

Left, right, islamic, PETA, whatever, anytime someone says “you need to give me more power so I can protect you from those ‘other’, ‘bad’ people”, grab onto your gun and head for the hills, because whether they say those ‘bad’ people are the rich, the jews, or the infidel, they really mean you.

As for death and misery in the 20th century, its convenient to claim Stalin as a right winger, that just won’t fly. He was a totalitarian left winger, and there were lots of totalitarian left wingers who killed lots of people since 1947. More Russians died in Stalin’s prison camps, or from starvation due to forced collectivization than in WWII.

The main saving grace of right-wing totalitarianism is usually the respect for property rights, which helps create economic opposition to the government. But that’s accidental at best, and shouldn’t be depended on.

Throughout history, political and economic freedom have been the best way to secure the greatest good for the common man; every attempt to impose it from above has lead to more death and misery.

My definition of left-wing, right-wing is from the original historic and true derivation. From the French parliment, during the French Revolutionary period, being divided with the portion of those seated to the left of the podium and those to the right of the podium being given those designations. Those on the right supported the Monarchists while those on the left supported the common man.

And as you so clearly state “swap one privileged group for another” alows the right-wing to include any mondern representation of monarchy. That would include the privilaged Bolsheviks that controlled the Soviet Union, Hitler’s Facists, and dare I say it in the same breath, the corporation controlled government of the USA.

Just because a government calls its self one thing doesn’t mean it is that thing. Hitler said he was for the common man but you truely don’t believe that, do you? Just as Bush 43 says he is from and for the common man but at the same time calls the rich and privilaged “his base”. That’s all just about successful propaganda, lies, distortion of the truth.

The millions of lives lost during the wars were astronomical as were the lives lost by Stalin’s economic practices and slave labor/prison camps. And we haven’t even brought into the picture such luminaries as Pol Pot or Chairman Mao. It’s just too much for me on this weekend of rememberance to check which constituted the greatest loss.

Your definition of wingedness is one thing, but your application of wingedness to modern times reapplied to the French Revolution could just as easily apply to the left-wing of the French Parliament as well.

I’m not going to let you get away with calling all totalitarianism right-wing, because that’s just not true. If Chairmain Mao is right-wing, so was Robespierre. Left-wing/right-wing have more to do with capitalism then they do with form of government. Most people plot political philosophies in multiple dimensions, with left vs. right having more to do with property/capital than dictatorship vs. anarchy.

The confusion in America I think extends from FDR, who defined liberalism vs. conservatism implying only one dimension. So they think that “liberal” regimes are ok, missing the horrors that someone like Castro or Guevara perpetuate in the name of “the people”.

I think that any political system in its pure form is bad. That’s why I prefer the “Democratic Capitalism” we have in America. Its a bastard child, sure, but I think that’s its strength.

Meanwhile, back in Flagstaff, the bookstore has retaliated with their own “no parking” signs. The health food store would have been better off if they’d just mellowed out.

i think the conversation into totalitarianism is important. i think the discussion about “left and right” isnt getting anywhere and in fact such specualtion into such usually diverts people form asking the central questions about the problems of existence.

Sure, totalitarian regimes ruled both nazi germany, the USSR, and now the corporate states of america. War is peace, freedom is slavery ignorance is strength. GW talks to jesus, the US state is holy, the flag is the shroud of turin. patriotism, nationalism and militarism are to be obeyed with fervent support and collecting paper money tokens is the meaning of life.

the good thing about this is totalitarianism fails. the US imperial overstretch shows totalitarian lack of logic in action. the US no longer possesses the ability to evolve its organizational structure. the state is ossified into corporate monopoly interest, whose media mechanisms coercively lie to manipulate public opinion. The people are now dumbed down to the point to where literally, war is peace, freedom is slavery and ignorance is strength. Just “support your troops” as Bush talks to Jesus. down into the rabbit hole we go, and the global financial system will not survive the coming breakdown of global order.

as a german american i can say personally i have no real issues with hitlers “mein kamph” or the policies of the third reich. but with todays people i could not trust our government with a twig much less a gun.

if the holcaust happend and you go by the american version of WW2 the nazi-sozis were very evil.

but as a huge doubter of this history i can not see anything wrong with them. history is filled with lies and WW2 is so complex. i can not fathom that my people “the germans” did this great evil to the jews. it personally can not see evough evidance to deny that the holocaust did not happen or prove to my self that it did happen. there is little proof eather way. i can see both sides of the coin and am left blind to it. i just refuse to believe it.

Any left wing vs right wing debate is hampered by the ignorance of other dimensions. See the Political Compass, which portrays political stance in a two-dimensional graph. Left-to-right is the X axis, and Authoritarian-to-Individualistic is the Y axis. Personally, I think the A-to-I axis is much more indicative of the possible evil that any stance has a potential for.

Trust me—Hitler was way behond The Ku Klux Klan ; they wouldn’t have had much of a place in his new vision of the world. Hitler and John Lennon tapped into the same visions when they thought about the future of Christianity. When John Lennon said: “Christianty will go, it will vanish” “I am right and I will be proven right.” {which he followed by his famous saying ” The Beatles are more poular than Jesus now” which recieved protests and death threats from the Ku Klux Klan and other Rightwing Christian groups in America. John was simply stating the truth. The truth was that kids were more enthusiastic about going to Beatle concerts than they were about going to Church. John Lennon could see that his charasmatic musical religion was more popular than Christianity. Hitler had the same effect, he could see that more kids were attending his rallies than church and you can even say that he became more popular than Jesus. What John Lennon said could be put side by side with what Hitler said on the future of Christianity: ” We are witnessing the final sumersaults of Christianity, it will last another hundred years or so, then it will vanish” for Hitler was also witnessing as John did a new religon that would replace Church. If you looked at a film of a Hitler rally and then looked at films of the early Beatle concerts if someone didn’t tell you would not be able to tell the difference.
